A lot of homebuilders are confident in the recovery and growth of Tampa and its surrounding areas, as the Tampa area was 17th in a ranking of the 50 most active metro statistical areas in home building for the first three quarters of 2010.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Tampa-Clearwater-St. Petersburg area issued more building permits for single-family homes and multifamily homes than many other metro areas during the period from January to September 2010.
In the Tampa metro area, a total of 4,498 residential units were authorized by building permits, with 3,486 permits for single-family homes and 1,012 for multifamily units. The area’s total is higher than that of any of the other Florida metro areas in the list: the Orlando-Kissimmee area, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-Miami Beach area and the Jacksonville area.

The metro area with the highest number of units covered by building permits was the Houston-Sugar Land-Baytown, Texas area, with a total of 22,332 units. Second was the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington, Texas area, with 15,227 units. Third was the New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area, with 13,248 units. Fourth and the last in the list with a 5-digit figure was the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria area, with 10,082 units.
Throughout the country, homebuilders obtained building permits for a total of 464,764 housing units from January to September 2010, nearly seven percent more than the 435,781 units during the same quarters in 2009. The 2010 total was made up of 354,287 single-family homes and 110,477 multifamily homes.
Of the ten regions across the U.S., the Southeast/Caribbean region where Florida is located had the highest number of units covered by building permits. A total of 114,624 housing units were authorized from January to September, more than 4.4 percent higher than the total in 2009, which was 109,770. Of the 114,624 units, 92,617 were single-family homes while 22,007 were multifamily units.
The Southeast/Caribbean region is made up of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Of these eight states, Florida posted the highest number of units authorized by permits. It had a total of 24,913 single-family homes and 5,728 multifamily homes. The next was North Carolina, with a total of 27,267 units.
