A large proportion of prospective home buyers searched for Tampa real estate in 2010, according to Move Inc., a real estate company that runs Realtor.com.
The finding was based on online searches by prospective home buyers on Realtor.com from January to December 2010. The higher number of online searches for Tampa homes and other real estate properties compared to properties in other cities signify that Tampa is a city most often considered by people looking for a place to move to.
The data can also mean that more Tampa renters are planning to become homeowners and are looking for homes to buy or more Tampa homeowners are considering buying a second or third home for real estate investment purposes.
In the compilation of online real estate searches, the ten most searched cities in the country last year were the following:
- Las Vegas
- Los Angeles
- Orlando
- San Antonio
- Miami
- Phoenix
- San Diego
- Austin
- Chicago
- Tampa
Looking at the list, one can see that the cities are located in the states most affected by the housing crisis, namely California, Florida, Nevada and Arizona. One can safely say that the significant price reduction and availability of lower-priced homes and other real estate properties in these states attracted searches. The media also often highlighted bargain home prices in these states, including opportunities for cheap real estate investments.
For San Antonio and Austin, foreclosure properties may not be the main attraction as these cities did not suffer from the crisis as hard as other cities. The inclusion of Austin and San Antonio in lists of best cities, fastest growing cities lists or best cities for retirement may have sparked the interest of prospective home buyers.
Chicago’s attraction could be its racial diversity and the presence of large employers in the city. Nevertheless, lower-priced foreclosures in certain parts of the city or just outside the city could also be among the main reasons for potential buyers’ interest in Chicago.
Tampa is often included in lists of best cities or top cities. Recently, Tampa was among cities in the following lists:
- Cities with the Highest Growth Rate (Brookings Institution)
- Cities Preferred by Military Retirees (USAA)
- Smartest Cities (Daily Beast)
In the Realtor.com listing, Tampa made its highest ranking during the month of December, when it was the seventh most searched city.
