Tampa Schools for Young Families Moving to Tampa

Posted on August 29, 2011

From preschool to college, you’ll have a lot of Tampa schools to choose from when your family moves to Tampa with the interstate removalists. There are at least 1,235 preschools to high schools spread out in the city of Tampa alone, with many of them rated 10 or 9 by GreatSchools.Org and rated excellent by parents and communities.

Here are five examples of the best schools for some categories:

Top Rating Public Preschools

  • Mabry Elementary School
  • Roosevelt Elementary School
  • Tampa Palms Elementary School
  • Westchase Elementary School
  • Bryant Elementary School

Top Rating Public-Charter Elementary Schools

  • Trinity School for Children – Lower Division
  • Richardson Montessori Academy
  • Tampa Charter School
  • Walton Academy
  • Community Charter School of Excellence

Top Rating Public Middle Schools

  • Coleman Middle School
  • Williams Middle Magnet School
  • Wilson Middle School
  • Benito Middle School
  • Farnell Middle School

Top Rating Public High Schools

  • Plant High School
  • Robinson High School
  • Sickles High School
  • Tampa Bay Tech High School
  • Gaither High School

Early Childhood Learning Programs

The Early Learning Coalition of Hillsborough County runs four programs in private child care centers, public school facilities and family child care homes:

  • School Readiness – 1,036 facilities serving more than 12,000 children
  • Voluntary Prekindergarten –  more than 1,100 sites serving more than 10,000 children
  • Head Start – 91 classrooms serving nearly 2,000 children
  • Prekindergarten Exceptional Education – 177 classrooms serving more than 3,000 children

Afterschool Program Run by the Tampa Parks and Recreation Department

The After School Activity Program (ASAP) offers children ages five to 12 park facilities where they can engage in team sports, cheerleading, arts and crafts, hobbies, games, fitness activities, computer learning, homework completion and develop friendships with children studying in other schools.

All in all, the Hillsborough County School District runs the following:

  • 142 elementary schools
  • 44 middle schools
  • 2 K-8 schools
  • 27 high schools
  • 4 career centers
  • 5 HiTEC
  • 30 charter schools
  • 82 adults programs held at schools and community facilities

The Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) also have a lot to be proud of. A number of these are the following:

– Two-thirds of the county’s public high schools are listed in the 2011 Washington Post High School Challenge Rankings.
– HCPS has been honored by the College Board with the 2011 Innovation Award for getting the biggest increase in Advanced Placement exam passing rates from 2008 to 2010 among school districts in the U.S.
– Three-fourths of the county’s elementary schools garnered a grade of A or B in 2011, with Bevis Elementary School getting nearly 200 points more than what it needed to earn a grade of A.

As our friends at the Florida-local Blue Whale Moving Company confirm, families moving to Tampa don’t need to worry about access to good Tampa schools. When your children are grown-up, they don’t need to go far away, as top universities and colleges are also nearby such as the University of South Florida, the University of Tampa and the Hillsborough Community College.

Good Tampa homes and good Tampa schools make good communities.
