Tampa Bay Counties Accounted for Nearly One-Fourth of Florida Home Sales

Nearly a quarter of Florida home sales in June 2012 were sales of homes in Tampa Bay counties.  A total of 6,613 single-family homes, townhomes, villas and condos were sold in the eight-county Tampa Bay region, accounting for 23.65% of total home sales in Florida.  That’s nearly one-fourth of the state’s total home sales.

Using the geographical definition by Florida’s economic development agency called Enterprise Florida and the non-profit regional organization Tampa Bay Partnership, the Tampa Bay region includes eight counties, namely Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco, Hernando, Citrus, Polk, Manatee and Sarasota. Altogether, these eight counties surround the Tampa Bay, a large estuary connected to the Gulf of Mexico on the western coast of Florida.

Of the eight Tampa Bay counties, Hillsborough and Pinellas posted the biggest home sales in June, selling 1,652 units and 1,526 units, respectively. Hillsborough and Pinellas are the counties where the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area lies.  This metro area has been surpassing most Florida metro areas in home sales and median sales prices for the past several months.

Among the 8 Tampa Bay counties, the ones that posted the highest median sales prices in June were Manatee and Sarasota counties.
