Tampa Is 8th Best City for Gen Y — Tampa Condos Await You

The survey of young people aged 19 to 29 by PayScale from July 2011 to July 2012 ranked Tampa as the eighth best city for Generation Y workers.  Lots of beautiful Tampa condos with amazing views and easy access to restaurants, nightlife and adventure await them.

The city of Tampa got a score of 0.83, based on factors that are important to Gen Y workers.  Young people give importance to commute time, wage change over time, stress level, total cash compensation, job satisfaction, flexible schedule, meaningful jobs, and general city life.

In Tampa, the average commute time is 20.7 minutes, the median pay is $36,600, the 2011 to 2012 increase in wage is 2.7% and the average percent of Gen Y employees in companies is 19%.

Based on general city score, these are the top 10 best cities for Generation Y workers:

1. Seattle, Washington 1.61
2. Houston, Texas 1.52
3. Minneapolis, Minnesota 1.46
4. Washington, D.C. 1.25
5. Boston, Massachusetts 1.16
6. Dallas, Texas 1.11
7. New York, New York 1.04
8. Tampa, Florida 0.83
9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania       0.81
9. San Francisco, California 0.81

The general city score for the U.S. is 1. This score is based on each city’s scores for Generation Y compensation, wage increase over time, commute time, and percent of Gen Y workers.

Based on median pay for Generation Y pay, these are the Top 12 cities:

1. San Francisco, California $51,300
2. Washington, D.C. $49,500
3. New York, New York $46,900
4. Boston, Massachusetts $46,200
5. Seattle, Washington $44,000
5. Houston, Texas $44,000
6. Baltimore, Maryland $42,900
7. San Diego $42,800
7. Minneapolis, Minnesota $42,800
8. Chicago, Illinois $42,600
9. Los Angeles, California $42,400
10. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania       $42,000

Among the Top 20 Best Cities for Gen Y workers, Tampa has the second lowest median pay for Gen Y employees, at $36,600.  It’s a bit higher than that of Riverside, which is $33,800, and closer to that of Miami, which is $38,100, and Saint Louis, which is $38,200.

However, Tampa has the 8th highest rate of wage increase for industry employees over the period from the second quarter of 2011 to the second quarter of 2012.  Tampa increased its wages over this period by 2.7%, higher than those of San Francisco, San Diego, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia, which have the highest median salaries for Gen Y workers.

As of September 7, there are 820 Tampa condos and townhouses available for sale, ranging from $8,000 to $2.5 million, based on data from the Florida Regional MLXchange. In the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metro area, there are 3,879 condos and townhouses for sale, ranging from $8,000 to $3.75 million.  In July, based on data from the Greater Tampa Association of Realtors (GTAR), there were 452 condos and townhouses sold in the Tampa area, with a median sales price of $91,000 and average sales price of $121,178.
