You’ll now be able to board more quickly as you no longer have to buy fare cards and you’ll have more flexibility as the streetcar will increase its frequency from every 20 minutes to every 15 minutes and will extend service hours.
TECO Streetcar rides will be free for the next three years, starting October 7, 2018. Why? The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) wants to help the city of Tampa boost streetcar ridership, improve the system so it becomes popular with the public, and have another viable transportation option that can alleviate traffic congestion.
The FDOT granted $2.67 million in funds to the Hillsborough Area Regional Transit (HART) so it can offer free rides to the public for three years.
There’s also an ongoing study to extend the streetcar from downtown Tampa to Tampa Heights and pursue federal funding for the extension.
So consider taking the Tampa streetcar. It will be great for Channelside, Ybor City, Water Street and top Tampa attractions along the route, such as historic sites and buildings in Ybor City, the Florida Aquarium and the Tampa Bay History Center.
